ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSE II TASK
1.
We
plan to design a course that we want to teach in the future. It is English for
law faculty.
2. Defining Context
Number of Student : 20 learners per class
Age :
about 17 years old
Educational Background : Senior High School, Madrasah Aliyah, and
Boarding School, and vocational
school
Goals of course : Improving Reading and Speaking skills
Time :
2 times a week. 90 minutes per meeting
Learning aids : Healthy articles, Nurse’s characters building
articles, Conversation text and some
video related to nurse in daily conversation.
Interest :
Vary. For example: Boy band, healthy, character building, fashion and etc.
Class Condition : It is a comfortable class with air conditioner,
and round seat. It is class with
mixed capability students. The teacher is in the center when
present the material. After presenting, the teacher may out from the circle,
and let the student discuss the material. There is a white board. Students bring their own laptop.
Lesson
Plan
Language :
Functional/Notional Grammar
Learning Material : “How to be a good nurse?” article
“How to prepare nurse interview” article
Reading
Material: The student will be given an article titled “How
to be a good nurse”. From the article, in language, the learners may learn new
vocabulary and simple tenses. Both we need in improving their reading
comprehension skills. In social context, learners will learn some characteristics
of being a good nurse. I think that this lesson will be great for a nurse.
Article related to their profession or healthy issues must be interesting for
them. After reading class, they will get two benefits, 1) skill in reading
comprehension, 2) new information.
Speaking
Material: In speaking section, the first thing, I would like
to teach is about list of nurse interview. The goals are to recognize question
prediction in nurse interview and how they should answer to get nice
impression. It will be used when they apply in a healthy centre or hospital.
Interview is a must in recruitment processes. In pair, they will act like an
interviewer and interviewee. After see a video about “Nurse Interview and read
list of question”, they will perform in front of the class without any text.
They are acting in real situation. I think it will be something that useful and
enjoyable for them.
Example of Great Lesson:
Reading
article
- A great nurse is compassionate. Compassionate is defined as the
feeling of concern and sympathy for others. We need to remember that our
patients, apart from cosmetic work or delivering babies, are generally not
in the healthcare setting because they want to be. They are fearful and at
risk of losing their health, possibly their lives, and concurrently, those
visitors with them may be at risk of losing precious loved ones. They are
not in control and are frightened, and they need us for support. This also
means that we are consummate advocates for the patient and willing
to speak up
when we do not feel the environment is as safe as it can be.
- A great nurse is empathetic. Empathetic is defined as the
ability and willingness to share in the feelings of others. It does not
mean that we agree with the patient or completely understand what they are
going through. It simply means that we are willing to make a concerted
effort to listen to them, to put ourselves in their place and to attempt
to understand their challenges. This needs to be done without judgment and
with the understanding that everyone has their own set of values and their
own life experiences that have brought them to this point.
- A great nurse is selfless. Selfless is defined as the
ability to give to others at the expense of themselves. I have countless
stories of nurses over the years that illustrate this ability to give to
others. This could be as simple as missing lunch to hold a patient’s hand
or to do something extraordinary for someone else. I had one trauma nurse
I will never forget who was caring for a homeless man hit by a car. When
the patient was being discharged back to the street, the nurse realized
that his shoes were not removed during the trauma because he did not own
any. His foot size was the same as the patient’s, so he gave him his shoes
and wore shoe covers for the rest of the day. I felt that this was a
tremendous example of selflessness. We recognized him as an everyday hero.
The stories go on and on and we need to celebrate them when they happen.
4. A great nurse is self-aware. Self-aware is defined as a high
degree of emotional intelligence. We are more effective in anything that we do
when we understand ourselves, the way we think, and where our values are in
reference to others as well as our personal strengths and limitations. Having
15 years of Emergency experience taught me a great deal about myself. There
were situations where I felt extremely vulnerable and ineffective, such as
dealing with abuse or trauma of small children that basically rendered me
emotionally distraught for some time after the events. In that situation, I
needed to learn coping mechanisms to deal with the situations or needed the support of my colleagues to trade with me or help me when
those times got tough. We all need to support and help each other get through
our tough days. (source:nursearticlecolections/electronicsource)
Note: After reading this article,
the student may find the difficult word. List of new vocabulary helps them to
comprehend this article. They can get the meaning from dictionary or even
guessing meaning technique. In comprehending process, learners are asked to
tell to other student why they have to have these characteristics, and what
benefits they can get if they have these characteristics. They are allowed to
make a concept before speak up.
Speaking Material
List
of General Nurse Interview
- What type of nursing experience do you have?
- Where did you get your training and what certifications do you have?
- What are your greatest strengths and weaknesses?
- Why do you want to work in our hospital and/or community?
- Why did you leave your last job?
- Tell me about a time in which you had to handle an irate physician, co-worker, or patient. How did you handle it and what were the results?
- Describe a difficult decision you've made and the process you went through to reach that decision!
- Why makes you right for this job?
Note: Firstly, they have to fully
understand, what the question asks about. Teacher also provides a video about
real situation in nurse interview. They have to listen to the answer of the
nurse candidate. Secondly, after they understand what question is, they have to
concept their own answers. It must be impressive and logically. With pair, they
will come to the front and act like a real situation of interview on video. One
becomes an interviewer and one become interviewee. They are not allowed to
bring any text. Teacher monitors them. Teacher is not allowed to give any
comment while learners’ performance. Correction is given after performance. Simply
we can say that we focus in notional and functional grammar. How the language
is used in social behavior and how language delivers human mind think. Source: 5-things-that-make-a-good-nurse-great)

A. We decide that in our answer for number 2, we have
integrated all frameworks for articulating beliefs. Start from aspect of the
language students have to know or comprehend. We also consider the social
context of language. How this lesson can help them to communicate or support
their behavior social life. In procedure that we use, it is dividing the students
in group or pair to think something or notion together, sharing information one
another. It also explains what teacher’s position in the teaching process. We think
we have involved all the frameworks.

When should one do needs assessments? Assessment
of needs must be conducted in initializing a course. However as a teacher we
always have to watch if their needs increase day
by day.
